A Christmas song is a bit of a strange animal. I mean, most artists claim songs come to them in dreams, or when they are just sitting playing the piano or guitar, or thinking about stuff in general but a Christmas song is a deliberate act of making music about a pre-existing subject. Weird? I think so.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Christmas as much as the next mildy sardonic misanthrope, and I have always loved carols and Frosty the Snowman, and even Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas has been known to make my left toe tap. However some might say that to many musical artists, writing and/or releasing a Christmas song is merely a pay-day exercise, a cynical barely disguised attempt to make more money by being jolly in a terrible sweater in a video with snowmen and angels, singing about sleigh bells, fat men in red coats and stuffing yourself with food.
But not all Christmas songs are jolly are they? Take for example the latest single by fairly gloomy, talented and facially reclusive songwriter and artist Sia. Her song ‘Santa’s Coming For Us.’ may mention hot chocolate, jingle bells and Christmas wishes but the title makes Santa sound like some scary homicidal maniac we want to leave town to avoid.
In fact she has recorded a whole Christmas album so one wonders what other titles are in store; Slay Ride? Rudolph The Red Nosed Psycho? Last Christmas I Cut Out Your Heart?
Perhaps I am being a bit of a Grinch, but sometimes the annual sound of silky-voiced Michael Bublé being festive and happy just makes me want to go away and weep quietly in a cave.
However, just for once, and for the sake of my family, I am determined to be positive so, rather than bang on any longer about the dystopian and fiscally acquisitive element of Christmas Songs, let me tell you about some of the fabulous new range of pocket priced and portable sized gifts we have for you on our site this Christmas.
