Scars and Stripes – Bring The Old Glory Back to Your Garden

You will have seen in yesterday’s blog that our country gardener and equipment specialist Dick has been extolling the virtues of the lovely and sleek Lawnflite LF43-SPBR Self-Propelled Rear-Roller Lawn Mower,  a silver fox of a lawn mower direct from the USA.

Well, Dick knows his stuff, and let’s face it, so does Lawnflite so you should definitely check it out. So there are your stripes from the title for, as we know, the rear roller on this baby will put neat stripes on your lawn. And the scars? read on.

Because even though we all know you will need to go on mowing as the Autumn progresses, albeit leaving the grass longer, there are other things you can do to prepare your lawn for the Winter and to make sure your big or little patch of green comes up trumps again next year, bringing the old glory back to your garden.

So, putting aside my usual flippancy (well, almost) and trying to do something useful for once, I  thought I’d point you at a couple of useful machines and tell you a little bit about why you might want one.

I’m talking about scarifying, which is basically another name for raking. This is the process of dragging tines across your lawn, not too deep to scar (and there’s your tenuous second link to the title) or do damage, but deep enough to remove thatch and moss that can choke your lawn and stop it getting the moisture and air it needs to survive through the hard season and stay healthy.

There are various ways of doing this. You could simply use a spring tine rake or, if you want to save a bit of energy, save your back and get the job done fast and efficiently and you have more than a postage stamp of a lawn, you could use a powered scarifier like one of these incredibly popular models.

So many of our customers choose between one of these two,  I guess you could call it The Great British Rake Off

First up, the Einhell GE-SA 1335P Petrol Combi Scarifier / Aerator, a neat and easy to use little petrol powered scarifier and aerator in one for a lawn size of around150-800m2 with a working width of 35cm, of which customers have said “...robust German Engineering. Very good performance.”, “a great little machine for the money” and  “Excellent product. I would recommend this machine to anyone with a minimum size garden.”

The other little beauty, also from German manufacturers Einhell is the ever popular Einhell GC-SC 2240P Petrol Lawn Scarifier

This model is the lowest priced petrol scarifier in its class – with top-notch build quality and reliability and is designed and

engineered in Germany. It’s got a  reliable 118cc engine, T a 40cm working-width and uses 18 steel blades for gentle yet intensive scarifying.

It’s designed for lawns up to of lawns up to 1000m2. Our customers have said… “Great bit of kit. Hugely impressed by this machine. And it’s a bargain!”, “Excellent value for a great German engineered product.” and “… a very good product and does a fantastic job.”

Enough said really. Your lawn needs care, even through the winter months. Gardening is not just a winter job. OK, when there’s a storm, a thick blanket of snow or it’s 9 below zero, you don’t really want to be in your garden with your shirt off and there’s not a lot you can do, but much in the same way that a puppy is not just for Christmas, a garden is not just for summer, so don’t forget to look after it in the difficult seasons so you can get more out of it next year.

Enjoy your garden.     Drew Hardy
