Hints & Tips
It’s time to give the hedges their first summer trim, but have a walk along first to make sure there are no birds nesting.
When cutting hedges there is a knack to getting perfectly straight tops and if you don’t trust yourself to get it right, use a string line with a couple of stakes at either end and cut to that.
Then there’ll be no wavy lines which eventually become a hedge which balloons out at the sides and looks like a mountain range on top.
We have a great range of Tanaka hedgetrimmers on our site, machines which are light to use and very powerful.
They have a five-year warranty from this Japanese company that produces garden machinery which is becoming the choice of the professionals.
For most small to medium-sized gardens the Tanaka TCH22E-AP2 (50) Petrol Hedgetrimmer will be fine.
It has double-reciprocating double-sided blades, 50cm long, powered by a 21.1cc engine, and a FREE SAFETY
HELMET WITH VISOR AND EAR MUFFS WHICH USUALLY COSTS £24.95.
The engine fires up really quickly with a light pull on the starter cord and it is powerful enough to tackle most domestic hedges, even stubborn thorn.
The tooth gap is 30mm so it can cut through thicker hedge-stems and leave a clean cut.
And the rear handle has a twist grip to make it easier to trim back hedge sides and odd shapes. It also makes it much more comfortable for left-handed gardeners.
Cost is £219, £70 less than the recommended price and it is delivered free then next working day with a five year warranty from Tanaka.
The Tanaka TCH22E-BP2 (62) Petrol Hedgetrimmer is a similar machine but this one has a longer, 62cm, cutting bar and is suitable for those of you with larger hedges to tame.
Fitted with a similar engine it has a slightly wider tooth gap of 35mm and also has at twist-grip handle. It costs £269, a reduction of £80 on the maker’s recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a similar warranty.
is the Tanaka TCH22E-CP2(66) Petrol Hedgetrimmer.
This one is designed for the keen gardener with long runs of hedging it has 66cm double-side reciprocating blades and has a 21.1cc engine designed to deliver maximum power while keeping exhaust emissions to a minimum and being mean on fuel.
Again, it starts with just a light pull on the starter cord and is light and easy to use, weighing only 5kg.
It is fitted with a larger fuel tank and has a 180 degree rotating rear handle with five settings to make working more comfortable and enable you to deal with odd-shaped hedges.
With a five year warranty and free next working day delivery it is priced at £349, £70 below the recommended price.
On our pages detailing Tanaka hedgetrimmers you will also find a number of single-bladed hedgetrimmers, often the choice of the professional. These are used in a sweeping motion and are often lighter than double-sided ones.
The Tanaka THT-2530 Hedgetrimmer has a 1.34hp 26cc engine with a Wallbro carburettor to make fast starting a doddle.
The cutting blade is 76cm long so you can trim large areas with a single sweep and it has a centrifugal clutch which stops the blades when the engine idles and a reinforced gear-casing to take the sort of treatment which professionals often dish out.
It weighs 5.2kg, costs £379, £110 below the recommended retail price and is delivered free the next working day with five year warranty.
