But imagine if the mower was nearly silent and gave just a good a cut with no smelly petrol fumes.
Well this is now possible thanks to the latest technology using lithium-ion batteries.
There is a large range of battery-powered mowers on the market and they are becoming increasingly popular.
To give you an idea of what is available, here are ten top cordless mowers, with one suitable for virtually every type of lawn.
First, one from a German manufacturer, and it’s the Einhell GE-CM 36LI Cordless Lawnmower.
This has a Power X-Change lithium-ion battery and has a run time of 30 minutes, so enough to deal with a small lawn. And it can be re-charged in an hour.
As it has a 36cm cutting width and is so light it is easy to negotiate flower beds and paths.

The Greenworks G-MAX 40Li-40V Lithium-Ion 3-in-1 Cordless Lawn Mower (G40LMK2X) has a lithium-ion battery with a continuous run time of 40 minutes, enough for you to cut a lawn of around 500m2 on a single charge.
The manufacturer says you can get an 80 percent charge in an hour and a full charge in two hours.
The cutting width is 40cm and cutting heights are from 20m to 70mm and it is supplied with a mulch plug so you can deal with the clippings the way you prefer.
Again there are other gardening products which work with the same battery which can be bought for very keen prices as there is no need to but a separate battery.
For instance, a leaf blower will cost only £49.99. This mower costs £299, is delivered free the next working day and has a two year warranty.
Here’s one from a long-established German garden machinery company.
The WOLF-Garten 72v Li-Ion Power 37 Cordless Lawnmower has a 72V lithium-ion battery which can be fully charged in 60 minutes and lets you either collect cuttings, mulch them or discharge at the back.
The machine has a cutting width of 37cm and cutting heights from 25mm to 70mm. The grass box holds 40 litres and there is an indicator to show when it needs emptying.
It weighs just 15kg and a carrying hand le to help move it around the garden.

Now a new one for this year from a British brand.
Light and Cable-Free Cobra RM4140v
The Cobra RM4140V Cordless Rear-Roller Lawnmower has a 40V Samsung lithium-ion battery with a power-level indicator and will mow for 30 minutes on after a 90-minute charge.
This one has a rear roller which will leave neat stripes as well as allowing you to mow right up to the edges of paths and borders.
The cutting width is 45cm and cutting heights are from 25mm to 75mm. The grass box holds 50 litres.
It costs £339, £20 less than the recommended price, has a two year warranty and is delivered free the next working day.
Now a new one for this year from one of the country’s favourite brands.
The Mountfield S42-HP LI Cordless Lawnmower has a powerful 80V lithium-ion battery which will cut the average-sized British lawn.
The cutting width is 41cm and it has a 60-litre grass box, and there are five cutting heights from 27mm to 80mm. The grass box has an indicator to show when it’s full – so no need to go back and collect clumps of missed grass cuttings.
The mower has a two year warranty and is delivered free the next working day. It costs £399, £60 less than the maker’s recommended price.
The Cobra MX4140V Cordless Lawnmower is driven by a 40V Samsung power pack and has a 41cm cutting width.
Easy to navigate around smaller lawns it has seven cutting heights from 25mm to 75mm and comes with a 50-litre grass box.
This mower costs £289, £10 off the recommended price and is delivered free the next working day with a two year warranty.
Now a battery-powered mower which can take on larger lawns.
The EGO LM2001EKIT Power+ Cordless Lawnmower has a 56V battery making it the most powerful lawnmower of its type.
It has a 49cm cutting width and even has headlights so you can continue mowing after dark.
With this mower you can collect, mulch or discharge clippings to the side and its 600W motor can deal with thick grass. Cutting heights are from 25mm to 80mm.
The grass box holds 60 litres making it a mower comparable with many petrol-powered models.
Mountfield S46-PD LI Power-Driven Cordless Lawnmower is a really powerful machine with a 80V lithium-ion battery which holds its charge when not in use.
This mower, as its name tells you, is a self-propelled machine capable of tackling rough areas of thick grass – its four large wheels also give it excellent grip and manoeuvrability.
The cutting width is 46cm and the five cutting heights are from 28mm to 80mm and the clippings are either collected in the 60 litre grass box or mulched.
The grass box has an indicator to tell you when it’s full.

This has a really powerful 80V lithium-ion battery made to last and to charge quickly.
This mower has the power to deal with the thicker, less well-kept bits of the garden which nevertheless still need clipping.
The cutting width is 41 cm and cutting g heights are from 20mm to 75mm with five positions.
It is fitted with a skid plate to prevent lawn scalping. And the grass box holds 55 litres and has a ‘grass full indicator.

And finally, the most powerful rechargeable mower available to day.
