A Chipper Off The Old Blog. Electric or Petrol, Which Should I Choose?

Now. I know it’s a terrible cliché to start a piece of writing with ‘People always ask me… blah, blah, blah’ and it’s almost always followed by a total fabrication. However, in this case Iam making an exception.  People often ask me (see not ALWAYS but often, a bit more thoughtful) …people often ask me ‘Should I choose a petrol or electric chipper or shredder?’ This is a particularity apposite question at this time of year when we are definitely thinking of clearing foliage making mulch and dealing with the branches that the next tail end of a hurricane will bring down.

In response therefore, I am taking some advice I wrote sometime ago and recycling it, for ’tis the green and responsible thing to do and recycling writing saves energy (mine) and sometimes you just have to tell it like it is. So here it is…

Like many of these questions, the choice depends hugely on what you want to chip or shred, on the size of your property and on the volume and size of the material you wish to shred. it’s no good buying a tiny electric powered shredder and trying to stick half oak tree through it.  It won’t work. And if you’ve seen the film  Fargo,  forget it…it would never have done the job. Likewise there is no point investing in a petrol beast called  THE SHREDMASTER! or some such like, if all you are going to do is stick two shovelfuls  of leaves, a bedraggled begonia and some cute looking twigs in it.
Of course, electric chippers and shredders are generally emission free, quiet and require little or no maintenance, so they are good for small volumes of debris – and I’m not talking about Jeffrey Archers’ books here…although what better fate could await them? You will be able to use one of these electric machines for shredding leaves, small twigs and grass clippings.

So if that is your kind of ‘thing’… we have the very ‘thing’ for you. The Einhell BG-KS 2040 Electric Garden-Shredder is only £99.95 and is German engineered and quiet.

It will deal with pine-cones. and will take branches of up to 40mm in diameter.

However, if you want to get serious on your branches, leaves and garden waste, have a large garden or an estate the size of Paul Hollywood’s hair-gel cupboard or need to shred or chip a large volume of big branches, then you probably need the go-anywhere, chip anything, all-purpose power of a Petrol chipper/shredder. Maybe like this fabulous and best selling Ardisam CS10 petrol Chipper Shredder which offers a 305cc Briggs and Stratton engine and sells for an amazing £999 (VAT Included).

Now I don’ say this often but listen. We really do have a bunch of great deals on chipper/shredders just in time for the big Autumn clear up so take a look at them here and then you will have bought a chipper off the old blog and I will have won my bet that I can get away with some of the the worst gardening puns ever assembled in a published work and still offer people a decent bargain.  Now get shredding and enjoy your garden.   Drew Hardy
