Lawn too big for an ordinary mower and too small for a lawn tractor? Here are ten top solutions

Here’s the great conundrum faced by many gardeners with large lawns.

Do I go for a conventional lawnmower with a wider cut or shall I invest in a ride-on. Or do I need a lawn tractor?

There are loads of considerations if you have a lawn like this. How wide a cut should I need, what sort of grass is there to cut, is it straggly and a bit rough or is it a smooth lawn. Or both.

The Toro 20975 TimeMaster Twin Cut Lawnmower has an extra-large 76 ccm cutting width and uses twin blades to create a powerful airflow in the cutting deck.

This means you can collect even wet grass, a useful attribute in British conditions.

This blades will also chop the clippings very finely so you can mulch them if you prefer. It will also eject the cut grass to the side if you are cutting longer areas.

The engine is from Briggs & Stratton with the claim that it will start in two pulls or less.

Another advantage of this machine is that it will match your walking pace. And it difficult conditions you can engage Traction Assist.

Designed to be easy to manoeuvre around trees and the like it also has a blade-brake clutch so you can disengage the blades when crossing paths or drives.

It costs £849, £150 less than the recommended price and is delivered with a bottle of engine oil within two to three days of ordering. There is a three year warranty on this one.

For a lawn just too big for a conventional lawnmower this could be what you need, the Mountfield 827M Compact Lawn Rider.

With a 66cm cutting width and a key-start 196 cc engine this little machine is small enough to get through the majority or garden gates and has a four forward and one reverse gears.

The collector holds 150 litres and can be emptied from the driver’s seat. Cutting heights are from 25 mm to 80 mm. And you can also buy a trailer hitch and mulch kit as extras.

This next one from the USA is a real sporty little ride-on.

The Cub Cadet CC114TA Ride-On Mower has a 76 cm cutting width but only a 46 cm turning circle.

And the speed is controlled via Transmatic drive and you can either collect the clippings, discharge them to the rear or mulch them. There are five cutting heights.

It costs £1499, is delivered free within five to seven working days and has a two year warranty.

Another from the States is the Lawnflite 76E Mini Rider, a neat handy little ride-on with six change-on-the move gears, a 76 cm cutting width and a mower which can either mulch or discharge to the side.

You can purchase a grass box as an additional extra.

On this one, the cutting deck is designed to mow right up to the edge and has been designed to follow the contours of the ground and not scalp it.

It also has wide wheels which are less likely to damage the surface of the lawn.

This is another neat little ride-on that looks more like a go-kart and has great agility.

The Snapper E2813523BVE Ride-On Mower, currently on special offer, can discharge clippings to the side, collect them or mulch.

It has a powerful Briggs & Stratton engine with five forward and one reverse gears and a split differential so that the lawn won’t be damaged when making tight turns.

An with this one you can just stand it on end of storage is limited. And that also makes cleaning the cutting deck much easier.

It costs £2099 and comes with a free mulching kit.

The cutting width is 72 cm and a hydrostatic drive makes it easy to navigate along narrow paths and around garden furniture.

And it has a headlight so you can keep mowing when it gets dusky.

This good-looking machine, the Murray Mid-Engine Ride-On Mower with Collector (309007X51) has a 76 cm cutting width and a tight turning circle and is easy and fun to drive.

It’s also powerful with a 10.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine and you can collect the clippings, mulch them or discharge to the side if cutting longer grass. Switching between the three takes just seconds.

Cutting heights are from 50 mm to 115 mm, so this could be the one to choose if you are cutting mostly longer grass like paddocks or orchards.

This next one is a more serious mower for larger areas but will turn on a sixpence and is the design often used by local authorities and others for cutting parkland and larger areas.

This has a 82 cm wide cutting recycling deck, but a grass box is available if you prefer to collect the cuttings.

There is a wide range of extras you can buy including a sun shade and a floor mat.

It costs£2374, £225 off the recommended selling price and it has a three years warranty. Delivery is three to five working days.

And finally another mower with the cutting deck at the front, excellent for cutting around trees, garden ornaments and the like.

The Stiga Villa 320 HST Mulching Ride-On Lawnmower can get into the awkward corners which conventional machines can’t tackle.

With a cutter deck 78 cm wide you can either mulch the clippings or discharge them to the rear and the hydrostatic transmission you have very exact speed control. And with this one the steering is through the rear wheels.
