Keep an eye open for the first spring flowers- they’re not too far away
Winter’s really starting to bite now, gales, blizzards, rain, the whole works.
And yes, it is nice to sit at home reading gardening mags and dreaming of a sunny spring, but a walk around the garden can also be enjoyable as there are the first signs of new growth just starting.
The delphiniums are throwing their first shoots upwards and lupins look quite perky even though they were recently covered in snow.
And why does the lawn suddenly look a little greener and longer.
You can, if the weather allows, get out with your fork and divide the bigger clumps of perennials. Just ease them out of the ground and with two forks, back to back, tease them apart. There’s nothing like making two plants where you previously had one!
If there is room, plant the ‘new’ one about a metre or so away from the existing one. Perennials look better when they are planted close together to give a bright colourful section, rather than dotted around.
And while you’re walking around in the crisp air, there’s nothing to gladden the heart like the first showing of daffodils. Tulips will be a few weeks more before they put in an appearance.

Surprise, surprise, snow blowers have been selling quickly lately and here are three from Swedish manufacturer Stiga to keep businesses on the move and your own paths clear and safe.
These machines are made with larger drives, industrial estates and schools and colleges in mind.
The Stiga Snow Patrol Dual-Stage Snow Blower is made for drives paths and courtyards with a 55 cm working height and 50 cm intake height. A 182 cc engine gives the power and it has four forward and two reverse gears. Cost £499 with a one year warranty and free next working day delivery.
The Stiga Pro 1171 HST Commercial Dual-stage Snow Blower costs £1799 and has been designed to clear larger industrial properties and for estate work with a Briggs & Stratton 305 cc specialist engine and can blast the snow up to 15 metres away.
