Pumpkins ‘need careful maintenance’

Pumpkins are a gourd-like squash that are very popular at this time of year for a wide range of reasons.

Not only are they a big hit with the kids for their Halloween novelty, but they are also very tasty in soups and a variety of baked dishes.

Professional gardener and author of Keeping a Few Hens in Your Garden Francine Raymond said that she loves to use them to decorate the house.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, she said that: "Speedy growers and greedy feeders all need manure-rich soil and plenty of water."

Any plants that need this treatment over winter are likely to benefit from mulching.

Here at MowDIRECT, we offer a wide range of chippers and shredders that recycle garden waste into this valuable substance.

Ms Raymond said that any pumpkins still growing will need to be protected from frost – and bringing them undercover is a good way to do this.
