It pays to plan ahead for the winter snows
Frosts are on the way as autumn settles in and now is the time to prepare for the winter snows which we can expect.
But today there is no reason to batten down the hatches at the first sight of a snowflake as modern snow clearing machinery means we can keep on the move and working whereas in the past a couple of inches of the stuff poleaxed the country.
There is a wide range of modern snow blowers to suit all tasks from a path and drive outside the house to forecourts and large parking areas.
These machines have been in use in other countries for years and is one of the reasons that they manage to keep going through the winter.
Stiga makes and extensive range and here are three of the latest models which we have in stock now ready for despatch.
For domestic use: Stiga snow blower
The simplest little machine is the Stiga Snow Electric 31 Snow Blower perfect for small domestic use and powerful enough to throw it five metres away.
It has a 31 cm working width which is quite adequate to clear paths and drives around the house.
It has a 1100 electric motor and works on hard surfaces with an intake height of 23 cm and is perfect for paths drives and areas outside the house.
There are no wheels and the machine slides along on snow shoes to clean right down to the ground.
Telescopic handles mean you can work at the most comfortable height to suit.
It costs £89, £10 less than the manufacturer’s recommended price. Delivery is free the next working day and there is a one year manufacturer’s guarantee.
Really versatile: Stiga self-propelled snow blower
A machine designed for larger areas and more demanding conditions is the Stiga Snow Patrol Dual-Stage Snow Blower.
A 182 cc petrol engine powers four forward and two reverse gears making it easy to handle when the conditions are rough. And the drive to each wheel can be controlled separately for making tighter turns.
It can cope with falls of up to 50 cm and has a working width of 55 cm.
It works by an auger at the front breaking down the snow even when it is trodden solid. It is then thrown back when an impellor breaks it down further before throwing it clear, up to ten metres away.
The chute rotates through 180 degrees and the deflector to change the height of the stream of snow is easily adjusted so the Snow Patrol can be used on all types of surfaces
Skid shoes help the machine move along and can be adjusted and the 12 in wheels have high traction deep pattered tyres.
This is a really heavy duty machine suitable for larger domestic premises or commercial use.
It costs £599 compared with the maker’s recommended price of £679. Delivery is free the next working day and there is a one year manufacturer’s warranty.
For major tasks: Stiga commercial snow blower
And if you have large commercial areas to keep free or long drives to keep clear then the Stiga Pro 1581 HST Commercial Dual-Stage Snow Blower could well be what you’re looking for.
This is a really powerful machine made for clearing deep snow from large areas and will work when temperatures get down to a bitter -20F.
It uses a 420 cc engine, is designed to be easy to start and has a large fuel tank to lessen the time spent re-fuelling.
The front rotating auger is made of cast iron to break up compacted snow and ice and throw it back to an impellor to break it up even further and throw it clear.
It can deal with falls up to 50 cm deep and has a working width of 81 cm. The infinite drive transmission works via six forward and two reverse gears and has been designed to be easy to drive around obstructions.
Skid shoes slide across the ground at the front of the machine and are reversible for when they become worn.
The chute for the snow rotates through 200 degrees and can be electrically adjusted from the control panel as you drive the machine along. And there is a headlight so you can work when it is murky.
This one costs £3069 compared with the manufacturer’s recommended price of £3379, plus there is free next working day delivery and a one year maker’s warranty.
Please order snow blowers in plenty of time as once it starts snowing it makes distribution far more difficult if we can’t deliver the machine to you because of blocked roads!
